About Us |
What is Lurgan Catalyst Parent?
Lurgan Catalyst Parent is aimed at supporting and empowering local
parents and the Lurgan community in addressing young people’s risk
taking behaviours and realising the Catalyst vision of bringing
about community change so that it’s easier for children and
underage young people to be alcohol, drug and sex free.
A cross-community parent focus group, working in partnership with
various community groups, has been established and has already
taken steps to address the issue of underage drinking in Lurgan.
By building knowledge, skills and understanding among parents and
equipping them to tackle risk-taking behaviours among young people
in their families and communities, a better, safer and healthier
community can be created.
What issues are Lurgan Catalyst Parent addressing?
It is normal for young people to be involved in risk taking
behaviours, however, when the behaviour has an adverse affect on
the young person’s health, their life choices, their families and
their communities, it is then that we must be proactive.
Children and young people today face tremendous pressure to become
involved in smoking, underage drinking, illicit drug use and
underage sex.
“Almost 93% of young people in Lurgan are drinking regularly
before the age of 18….36% are drinking regularly before the age of
13.”
Lurgan Mail 17th March 2005
Research shows that parents are the strongest influence on a young
person’s big decisions, including whether to drink, smoke or have
sex. Lurgan Catalyst Parent supports parents in countering
negative community risk taking behaviour patterns with a
commitment to the ongoing personal development of the young person
