PRESS RELEASE – 30.04.07
Two Communities, One Vision
The Community Outreach Group, an initiative of Shankill Parish,
St. Paul’s and St. Peter’s Churches in Lurgan, hosted a community
breakfast in the Jethro Centre on Saturday morning, creating not
only a forum for the two communities to come together, but an
opportunity to unite around issues in the community of common
concern. As part of the breakfast, Lurgan Catalyst Parent had the
opportunity to present their vision and their work in the
community.

Shankill Parish, St. Paul’s and St. Peter’s Churches in Lurgan
Lurgan Catalyst Parent, a project of Love for Life, is active
in the local community, primarily working with parents and
community workers and leaders, around issues relating to young
people and risk taking behaviours, with the vision of bringing
about community change so that it’s easier for children and
underage young people to be alcohol, drug and sex free.
Dr Richard Barr, CEO of Love for Life, commented:
“There are common concerns in local communities around dangerous
patterns of risk taking behaviour amongst young people, including
underage sexual activity and serious alcohol and drug use. Through
working with parents and the local community, we want to develop
strategies that will bring changes in communities around these
issues, creating communities in which it is easier for children
and underage young people to be alcohol, drug and sex free.”
Michele Wilkinson, Community Development Worker with Lurgan
Catalyst Parent, commented:
“The community breakfast offered the perfect opportunity to
encourage members of the Lurgan community to sign up to the
Catalyst vision. Our hope is that members from across the Lurgan
community will sign up to the vision, so that together we take
responsibility and ownership for the community in which our
children and young people are growing up.”
