PRESS RELEASE – 12.10.07
Lurgan Tigers “Talk about Tough Issues”
Parents in Lurgan Tigers Rugby and Cricket Club recently
completed a three week parenting workshop entitled ‘Talking to
your Children About Tough Issues’.
The workshop, facilitated by Brendy McCann from DAWN and Michele
Wilkinson from Lurgan Catalyst Parent, explored practical ways
that parents can prevent young people getting involved in risk
taking behaviours like alcohol and drug use. It was also an
opportunity to remind parents that they are the strongest
influence in their children’s lives and they can and do make a
difference.
Michele Wilkinson from Lurgan Catalyst Parent commented:
‘Parents are only too aware of the risks there are for young
people around alcohol, drugs and underage sex. The workshops are
designed to help parents to identify risk factors in their
families and communities and then to look at the protective
factors that they can put in place to buffet and lessen these
risks.’
‘These are very simple things that the parents are probably
already doing e.g. communication, having clear rules about
alcohol and drugs etc.’
The aim of the ‘Talking to your Children About Tough Issues’
workshop is to affirm parents in the importance of their
involvement in talking to their children about these issues and
also to give them additional skills and resources to support
them.
